Dubai Shamaal ‘lift off’

December 2nd is the National Day of the United Arab Emirates & on this day each year the richest race in the history of paddling is held.

It has grown in 3 short years to join the Molokai as one of the races that you have to win if you want to enter the Legends classroom.

In 2008 the race offered $130 000 in prize money & can be argued was the finest field of Ocean paddlers ever assembled to race. Iron Men, national champions, Olympic champions all lined up to race with the Australian Tim Jacobs coming home 1st in the men’s race & South African Michelle Eray winning the Women’s race.

The 2009 prize pot has been downgraded to $60 000 in light of the Global economic slow down, but is still comfortably the richest race on the Planet.

2009 Race Director Wayne Randall said, ” We look forward to welcoming all our old friends back to Dubai again & enjoying seeing the best paddlers in the World in action.”
